Back Yourself

I want to be a published author. I declared that intention online by setting up this author website and changing my Instagram handle to gemmafranksauthor.

As my name as a standalone Instagram handle was already taken, I debated whether to append ‘author’ or ‘writer’ to the end of my name. I am a writer and have been one for years in various capacities: as a public relations consultant and journalist. But am I in fact an author? I have written a novel, and while a few people have read it, it is not yet published.

I typically associate being an author with having a novel published in one’s name. But after looking at various dictionary definitions, it turns out one doesn’t need to have a book published in one’s name to be considered an author. You could still be considered an author if you’ve had an article published. As I used to write a column for a local newspaper, I qualify.

From what I’ve heard, the journey to having one’s novel published is fraught with obstacles, hurdles, pitfalls, and a gazillion potential setbacks. Writers need to not only have a well-crafted story, which is not easy in itself, but need to somehow get that story in front of the right pair of eyes. As writers, we need to find someone who believes our story will appeal to readers.

I’ve come to realise that before I find someone to back me, and my novel, I first need to back myself. As someone who is not naturally imbued with heaps of self-confidence, this is something I am consciously working on. I do believe my novel has merits. My beta readers have loved it.

I’ll let you know how I progress on my journey to publication. If you have any tips, or would like to share your own experiences, please contact me.
